Key risks
The following risks may be materially relevant
but may not always be adequately captured by the synthetic risk indicator and may cause additional loss:
Liquidity risk:
Where a significant level of investment is made in financial instruments that may under certain circumstances have a relatively low level of liquidity, there is a material risk that the fund will not be able to transact at advantageous times or prices. This could reduce the fund's returns.
Operational risk and risks related to asset safekeeping:
In specific circumstances, there may be a material risk of loss resulting from human error, inadequate or failed internal systems, processes or controls, or from external events.
Concentration risk:
To the extent that the fund's investments are concentrated in a particular country, market, industry, sector or asset class, the fund may be susceptible to loss due to adverse occurrences affecting that country, market, industry, sector or asset class.
Highlights
LO Funds (CH) - Swiss Small & Mid Caps is an actively managed portfolio. Its long-only Swiss equity strategy has been in place since September 1996. It invests primarily in small and midcap Swiss equity securities. It seeks to outperform the SPI Extra TR® index (registered trademark of SIX Swiss Exchange AG) over the long-term. The investment approach is bottom-up and based on rigorous fundamental research seeking to identify leading firms with clear competitive advantages, proven management, core competencies and above average growth perspectives. The portfolio is composed of around 35 positions, well balanced between cyclical, growth and value stocks. In periods of a stagnant economic environment, the fund can rebalance a certain proportion of its investments towards larger capitalizations. Risk management is performed by fund managers at a portfolio level, alongside independent teams who manage investment risks and monitor operational risks. The strategy does not pursue a sustainability goal. However, it integrates environmental, social and/or governance ("ESG") considerations as part of its investment process seeking to identify ESG-related risks.

MARKET COMMENTARY
The Swiss market, as measured by the Swiss Performance Index (SPI), lost 0.25% in August while the Swiss small & mid-cap index (SPI Extra) gained 0.33%. This compares with a 2.58% gain for the MSCI World Index (NDDUWI), a 2.72% gain for the S&P 500 (SPX) and a +0.47% gain for the MSCI Europe Index (MXEU).
Better-than-expected corporate earnings drove equity markets higher in August. Nvidia, as a market bellwether, not only exceeded expectations but also guided to 70% sales growth next year versus consensus expectations of 44%. The company explained this growth could have been as high as 100% had it not been for capacity constraints. In addition, market participants focused on interest rates. Treasury Secretary Bessent announced plans to at least double the repurchases of long-dated Treasury securities, which some interpreted as concern about elevated borrowing costs, reigniting the fiscal-sustainability debate. Fed Chair Warsh’s speech at Jackson Hole reasserted commitment to the 2% inflation target and was read as hawkish, increasing the odds of a September hike from 35% to over 60%. Elsewhere, the US-Iran standoff persisted.
In terms of style factors, cyclicals outperformed defensives globally and in Switzerland. Value and growth performed in line globally but momentum lagged.
PORTFOLIO ACTIVITY
In August, we added positions in Georg Fischer and OC Oerlikon, as well as Sensirion and VZ Holding (VZ), and exited our holdings in Daetwyler, dormakaba, Flughafen Zürich and Sunrise Communications.
PERFORMANCE
LO Funds (CH) – Swiss Small & Mid Caps institutional share class finished August with a return of 0.34%, outperforming its benchmark by 1 bps, the SPI Extra TR.
Our overweights in Interroll, Kardex and Julius Baer were the top contributors in August. The overweights in Huber + Suhner, Swissquote and SIG Group detracted from it. In the SPI Extra, IT and communication services performed best, while utilities and consumer staples declined the most.
OUTLOOK
We remain constructive in our view. Corporate earnings have been better than expected. Valuations look reasonable, with the US, Switzerland and Europe all trading within 4-6% of their 10-year averages. Manufacturing PMIs are in expansion territory and the Ifo Business Climate Index (IFO) rose more than expected in August.
That said, we recognise several uncertainties, such as the US-Iran war and its implications for the oil price and inflation, whether the Fed will raise interest rates, and upcoming US midterm elections. These could create volatility in the near term.
